Found 06/2015, Goodwill (Metric and 183)

This remarkably joyful piece breaks a field of action-painting style watercolor drabs, splatters, and streaks into a series of curving, interweaving ribbons. An artist operating out of the color field school might have chosen to force these free-flowing designs into a rigid grid (and, indeed, the vertical streams of paint combine with the dark lines to suggest a formal, vertical pattern). Yet the artist achieves the remarkable effect of elevating the freeform, liquid design of motion painting into a dynamic and flowing tapestry. In effect, the artist achieves greater freedom by adding a nuanced formalism. This is, in essence, the artistic process: harnessing raw and unworked creativity, and through form, creating a piece of lasting value.
